LuLu inaugurates scheme to support Saudi farmers

LuLu Hypermarket has launched a scheme to support Saudi Arabia’s farmers.

The scheme was launched on Sunday in Riyadh, and the company’s “From Our Land” initiative aims to support local agribusinesses and Saudi farmers.

The initiative will run at LuLu hypermarkets in Khurais in Riyadh and in Dammam in Shati.

The company also entered into an agreement with the Al-Rowia Cooperative Society for Agricultural Marketing to sell Saudi-grown bananas, papayas and mangoes from Jazan to its shoppers.

These products are also marked as export-quality products by food packaging company Global Star.

The peak season for bananas will be in mid-2023, and Saudi Arabian mangoes will also be showcased at the hypermarket’s Saudi Mango Festival in April.

Shehim Mohammed, director of LuLu Saudi Arabia told Arab News: “At LuLu, we are committed not only to the larger national food sustainability vision of the Saudi leadership but also to supporting the Saudi farmer.”

“Presently, LuLu has made a commitment to taking 10 tons of produce every week and this is expected to grow as demand increases. Excess production will also be channeled to GCC export markets through the LuLu network of retail warehouses and hypermarkets.”

Director general for Riyadh region at the Saudi Ministry of Agriculture officially launched the campaign in Riyadh. Other officials who were present at the launch include Mean Angkeri, director general, Cooperative Society, and Sulaiman Aljitali, director general of marketing, Riyadh region — Ministry of Agriculture.

In Dammam, the inauguration was led by Amer Almutari, director general of the Ministry of Agriculture, Eastern Province. Abtissam Alkumazi, assistant to the director general, Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development was also present.
