Ramadan: Qatar witnesses surge in food commodities

Markets and shops across Qatar are witnessing an abundance of consumer and non-consumable food commodities and a doubling of supply quotas coinciding with Ramadan.

This comes at a time when sales outlets are jostling to win shoppers through a package of offers and discounts on goods.

Food companies reaffirm the availability of sufficient stocks of commodities and food products to cover local consumption, noting that the prices of Ramadan commodities remain stable owing to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s initiatives and an array of promotions and discounts, which increased the rate of competition.

Commercial complexes have ramped up their preparations to prepare for the holy month, where shops, especially grocery chains, have pushed their limits to meet the needs of customers at competitive prices.

In their statement to Qatar News Agency, they said that the markets and shops are witnessing remarkable movement these days by shoppers to buy Ramadan goods.

Compared to other months, the consumption rate during the month of Ramadan rises by around 30 per cent, which inevitably adds to financial burden.

To tackle this, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry organised a host of initiatives for Ramadan during the past week which included a consumer goods list, covering more than 900 commodities, in coordination with approximately 20 malls, shops and commercial outlets.

The Ministry also announced the joint national initiative, run in coordination with the Ministry of Municipality and the Widam Food Company to encourage local production and subsidise the prices of sheep meat ahead of Ramadan.
