Retailers in Dubai are preparing for a busy Diwali.

India’s biggest and most important holiday of the year, Diwali is celebrated over five days, starting Sunday, and retailers in Dubai are looking to cash in, offering customers a plethora of shopping deals and big-prize competitions.

Shoppers will have the chance to win gold bars, furniture sets and luxury cars at malls across the city, while visitors to Dubai’s Oasis Mall can win a place in the audience at television game show Kaun Banega Crorepati – the official Hindi adaptation of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? ‘

As pandemic-related restrictions continue to lift in the city and people return to in-store shopping, retailers are braced for bumper sales.

“The pandemic has caused a major shift in the retail landscape. Retail was one of the worst-hit sectors during the pandemic and it was challenging to navigate and adapt to the new normal”, John Paul Alukkas, managing director of jewellery and e-commerce chain Joyalukkas Group, told Gulf News.

“People will surely be looking forward to buying jewellery this year as it is just after the pandemic. For the UAE’s jewellery sector, Diwali 2022 can be a good time as markets seem to be stabilising now.”

Grocery stores are also expecting an uptick in sales, as families and friends plan to enjoy festive meals together this year, many for the first time since Covid-19 rules came to an end.

“Diwali, like all other major festivals, is of utmost importance for the UAE’s retail sector due to the presence of the large Indian diaspora,” Ashutosh Chakradeo, chief retail officer of Choithrams GCC told Gulf News.

“At Choithrams, we celebrate Diwali with our Goodness campaign. We start planning for the festival at the beginning of the year to ensure we are in line with trends and have a wide range of products to offer to our customers.”

Mohammed Feras Arayqat, director of retail registration at DFRE, said: “Diwali in Dubai is an important celebration of our city’s diversity and our strong and historic links with India and its people that go back for generations.

“This festival is about celebrating Diwali alongside our Indian residents and visitors, underscoring our status as a global city that is home to more than 200 nationalities, and strengthening Dubai’s position as a world-leading retail and entertainment destination where everyone can find unique experiences all year round.”
