7 questions with … Marc Laurent

Marc Laurent is president of the retail division of Gulf Marketing Group (GMG), recent acquirer and operator of Geant in the Middle East. The acquisition marked GMG’s venture into food retail and the company’s aim to expand the grocery retailer amid the rapid growth of the region’s food economy. Besides operating 18 stores in the UAE, GMG recently opened Monoprix in Dubai Hills’ Garden Residence. Laurent shares his ten-year vision for GMG Retail.

What is the best way to start your day?  

Waking up at 6.30am and preparing breakfast with the kids gives me a great energy and a positive start.

If you could be any character from a movie, who would you be?  

Indiana Jones for the adventure, humour and the achievements.

What is your greatest achievement?  

Taking the decision to become an expatriate – it was a good move for my career and family. It opens the mind and gives you the opportunity to meet different people and experience different cultures.

What advice would you give your 13-year-old self?  

Do what feels right for you and follow your instinct.

If you had 24 hours left on Earth, what would you do?  

Spend time with my family with a nice meal.

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?  

Bill Gates –  using his brain and money to eradicate sickness and engage in clean water.

What would you like to achieve in the next 10 years?  

Make GMG Consumer the top retailer in the region
