Carrefour launches first sustainable BIO store

Carrefour has opened its first BIO store in City Centre Me’aisem, Dubai, which features the retailer’s first cafe and in-store hydroponic farm.

Focusing on organic shopping, locally sourced products and sustainability, the store sells a selection of fruit and vegetables from organic-certified farms, poultry and meat with no added hormones, organic-fed fish, a range of vegan, keto and dairy-free products, and ecologically conscious products, including beauty, personal and home care items.

It also supports small and medium-size enterprises, and stocks a range of locally made products.

And in keeping with Carrefour’s goal to eliminate single-use plastic by 2025, only recyclable paper bags are used. Shoppers can even bring their own containers to fill with detergents and water.

Tables and shelves are made from recycled wooden pallets, and digital price tags accessible via Wi-Fi have replaced paper labels. Eco-friendly equipment installed throughout the store will reduce energy consumption by 15 per cent.

Carrefour’s efforts align with the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment’s mission to promote sustainability and protect the country’s ecosystems.

The store was inaugurated on Friday, February 25, by Mariam Bint Mohammed Saeed Hareb Almheiri, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, and Hani Weiss, CEO of Majid Al Futtaim Retail.

“We are honoured to have gained the support of the UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment as we seek to champion healthy living and forge a greener future together with our government,” said Mr Weiss.

“The development of Carrefour BIO is part of our ongoing mission to elevate retail and provide our customers with more choices that can protect the interests of their health, their wallet and the environment.

“Our research tells us that whilst healthy eating is now a huge priority, many consumers limit organic shopping as they perceive it as a more expensive option,” Mr Weiss said.

“Customers can now find healthy products, make conscious decisions whilst dining out and help save the planet one recyclable bag at a time – all under one roof in Carrefour’s BIO store.”
